Trees that are no longer wanted can be put into the green composting skips at the two Household Waste Recycling Centres in Bilford Road and Hallow Road and as in previous years room has also been made available at the three Homebase Stores in the city and at Blooms Garden Centre in Droitwich Road.
“All we ask is that people remove the Christmas tree decorations at home,” said John Bond the Council’s Environmental Protection Officer. “we don’t want residents to lose their favourite baubles!”
All the trees that are placed in the skips will be shredded and composted and turned into a soil conditioner which can then be returned to the tend. Alternatively householders with a shredder can use their chipped trees on their own garden. The chipped branches can be added to the compost heap or used as surface mulch particularly on acid loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas. “Strawberry plants really love old Christmas tree needles,” said Mr. Bond.
Worcester City Council was the first local authority in the UK to start a Christmas channelise recycling scheme. Now most local authorities have followed its lead to give their own service. “In 1991 when we began we recycled just 70 trees,” added Mr Bond. “This figure has grown dramatically and last year we recycled more than 9,000 trees recycled at the four city displace sites alone.” [ADVERTHERE]Related article:
