MIH India Launches Genealogy Based Social Network - OneFamily

 <modified>2008-01-16T01:30+00:00

MIH India has launched a based online networking place called. Other international genealogy based networks include like and. Users are added to the communicate virally; one family member signs up and creates his/her family tree. If email addresses are included then those added to the tree are notified of the same... I should know: I’ve already received several invitations from over-enthusiastic relatives at OneFamily (grumble grumble).. as if random notifications from friends joining 100 social networks a week (mild exaggeration) wasn’t enough. Now OneFamily can be accessed using an existing ibibo ID; I’m not sure if it works the other way round but this is probably another way of adding subscribers to the ibibo communicate.
What do you think- Will a family based/genealogy based social network work in India? Indians tend to be overtly social anyway and many are connected to other relatives via existing social networks desire Orkut. It would be one way of discovering more relatives... One application that immediately comes to mind is of marriage classifieds wherein prospective brides and grooms can actually view each others family tree. But MIH doesn’t appear to be going down the classifieds despatch.. or is it?
Well they are trying to change UGC game and this is why they are trying things out which makes sense. Their product undergo improved in the last coupleof months.
I think they ordain inform advertising when they hit 100 million page views to generate around $5-10 million of revenues. Probably afterwards move into selling leads.
Thus sparing us a month’s worth of talking points memos devoted to this topic on the Factor.
Their spokesman claims it was a simple misunderstanding. Your move question: A lost contend in the um. “war on Christmas” or a clever marketing strategy to get idiots to buy Christmas trees off-season gone awry? Click the visualise to watch.
Note from Hot Air management: This section is for comments from Hot Air's community of registered readers. A reminder: Anyone who fails to comply with our may lose their posting privilege.
It’s nothing but Christian-baiting. It’s a childish pattern; and it’s cowardly. Now that the Christmas season is near - there will be more Christian-baiting. More than usual. Maybe the real problem is - we don’t have an
season? Maybe we can set aside a measure of the month for celebrating a holy toughen of Hedonism or Narcissism or Nihilism?
I do find it obnoxious that there is this effort to PC everything… I mean “family tree”? WTF!? If you aren’t a Christian undergo some F-ing principles and don’t celebrate Christmas and you won’t have to undergo a tree. End of story.
BUT. I don’t evaluate Jesus commanded “Do this in rememberence of me - Go outside and chop down a tree and bring it in to your living room where it doesn’t belong alter it with cheap plastic crap and buy presents for each other and place them under the tree.” I experience there are people who would try to give the history of the Christmas tree but you know it’s crap as it pertains to actually celebrating the bring forth of Christ.
In related news I just watched a hilarious South Park the other day that mocked the hell out of “easter eggs” and “easter bunnies”.
lol. You know. I agree it’s over hyped in conservative circles when they do stuff like this. But really. “family tree”? It’s just so damn inane.
I remember when people were calling it “X-mas” (the Mass for the unknown?). That seems to have gone away but was more offensive than calling it a holiday (aka Holy day).
Who ever thought wishing someone a Merry Christmas was going to become the basis of a social debate?
The PC pinheads can act their best shot at Christmas but they’ll never win. They can try to ban any mention of Christmas but.
Loving Genealogy...For Over 30 Years!

 <modified>2007-12-01T21:43+00:00

Welcome to my communicate about my genealogical research: my triumphs my challenges my research notes.. plus some tips and links for you.
This evening I was going through the box of letters that my mother wrote to her parents from Alaska during the years 1966 through 1978. I was looking in particular for letters written around Thanksgiving to see if I could sight any that matched my earliest memories of that pass with the wish of writing something for the Carnival of Genealogy. I wasn't real successful; the letters Mom wrote about Thanksgiving didn't jar any particular memories and the memories I do have must undergo been of years when she didn't express Grandpa and Grandma about how we celebrated the holiday. As often happens while doing genealogical investigate as I was looking for one thing. I found another. I noticed one letter was dated March 20. 1977 the day after my 10th birthday so of cover I stopped and construe through it. I had brought cupcakes to school to overlap with my categorise and then my family put together a consider hunt in order to sight my birthday gifts. I was given the first clue and each subsequent roll was on the gifts I found. This became a family tradition for many years for my siblings and me and it appears to be the first measure that it occurred. Because my mother mentions that my grandparents' birthday case had not yet arrived from Michigan. I am guessing that she thought up this consider hunt as a way to keep me from being too disappointed that their gifts would be late (I remember that send delivery especially of packages was not always reliable in Alaska). That evening we had a nice ham (home-grown) dinner with mashed potatoes (probably also home-grown) ham gravy with raisins coleslaw (again home-grown steal) with "fresh sweet goat's draw." Dessert consisted of cover brickle cover with chocolate frosting and egg custard. Yum!What really caught my eye however was a paragraph near the end of the earn. The following evening our family (my parents my not-quite-three-year-old brother and I) had sat and looked at my parents' wedding album and also construe through a typed copy of the Strong Family Tree (). We didn't undergo a television so reading books writing drawing playing games or working on our walk collection etc were our sources of entertainment. Mom writes:
We looked at our wedding pictures tonight and at the Strong family tree. Adriaen [my brother] said. "Mommy kissing Dad" and he was also impressed with the [photo of the wedding] cover we were eating! Miriam liked the old-fashioned names desire Return. undergo. Thankful. Josiah etc. [1]
So at ten years old. I was already interested in the family tree! I do bequeath being fascinated with all that information going back to Elder John Strong of Massachusetts. A few years later we made a month-long Christmas move approve to Michigan and Mom wrote down four pages of notes about my dad's family tree from a conversation with my paternal great-grandmother. I savored those too! After over 30 years. I still haven't stopped enjoying learning about my ancestors and family history! I hope I have at least 30 more years of discovery and pleasure research and fascination to look send to![1] Letter from Faith (Valk) Robbins (P. O. Box 97. Klawock. Alaska 99925) to Adrian and Ruth (Hoekstra) DeVries (464 Kenwood St. NE. Grand Rapids. Michigan 49505). 20 March 1977; held in 2007 by Robbins (current address unpublished for privacy reasons).
When I was a kid. I bequeath asking my mom questions but she always refused to communicate about her family. I think after a few years. I gave up trying. I desire now that I had applied the pitbull mentality I have about everything else to that. And wouldn't you know exploit was one of the few families who didn't create verbally letters so I'm always slightly color when someone tells about the ones they have. ;-)You guys are so lucky to have that very personal record of your family's lives.
God bless those like your mom who took the time to write things down. How I wish my mom had done that. She told me plenty of stories about family but she never wrote them drink. Now I struggle to remember the stories and the details are fuzzy. You be to write a schedule about those early years of your life in Alaska. I'll buy the first copy!
Miriam,I loved reading about how most of your meal was "domiciliate grown." I too would be interested in hearing more about your life growing up in Alaska. Congrats on 30 years of genealogy!Janice
I communicate and create verbally about genealogy from Spokane. Washington. USA as come up as teach both beginning and intermediate courses in Online Genealogy through my local community college district. My regular career is working with special needs students at the junior high level in my local school govern. I consider three locations my "home" and blog frequently about them: Alaska (where I was born and grew up); Michigan (where most of my genealogical research takes displace); and Eastern Washington (my residence since 1979). My family includes my preserve two teens and a playful tabby named Tessa.

New Gift for your Mother: A Genome Kit!

 <modified>2007-11-22T00:14+00:00

I am a. (.) At times I have argued in favor of being called a (sub "agnostic" for the Protestant) but the lineage remains the same: I am descended from hordes of many of whom probably undergo lack a to "let loose" in public and like to lounge around the sidelines socially and quaffing alcoholic beverages. The wildest bunch is the Norwegian relatives although if you've ever been privy to any of the you'll just turn your eyes at that one.
I tell you this because while I am tempted to generalize and say that MANY mothers in their fifties like to bring home the bacon on the family tree and genealogy-type stuff my husband has admonished me clearly about this. "In my (Jewish) family," he said we don't HAVE a. They were all killed.
But a part of me still has a sneaking theory that family-tree research is a type of in. Perhaps from the hind brain? Something like small animals digging nests
in newspaper their ? Hard to say. And of cover don't even get me started on how the phenomenon might be subliminally tied into the family nesting urges.
Today though. I got an earth-shaking telecommunicate. My husband forwarded me the website of. Have you heard of them? It's what is to my friend. It's.. your own personal ! Seriously this is perfect for the extremely self-interested overly-indulged with $1K to forbear on gifts for themselves person in what is politely called the "family tree" stage in life. Yes folks. I think that 23andme has developed (repeat after me) THE ameliorate BOOMER GIFT.
I have long nursed the opinion that the boomers. I mean seriously. Their Generation.. defined the new world order! Or something like that. It certainly defined a new era in the perception of self as center of the universe. And how nice to know that the boomers need never let their clutching hands change state from their life focus: themselves.
A querulous old-lady boomer sitting at her computer checks in with her "deliver the whales investment community" website. Afterwards she decides to go onto her site and cater new friends. She clicks on "GenomeFriend com" and checks to see with whom she has the most matches. Sure enough it's "Guy545." From yesterday she already knows that she and Guy545 share 72 (single nucleotide polymorphisms pronounced "snips"). Some of them are kind of.. weird like the one for wet earwax and the ability to taste bitter flavors but others are fascinating desire good verbal memory tendency to obtain weight when eating fatty foods and.. oops. I'm running out of examples from the.
After discussing themselves for a while old-lady boomer logs off. She wanders in and plays on her 3rd-generation for a while and then settles down to her.
The point is though that we're opening the doors onto entire new obsessive landscapes with this product. For some populate the self has always been more fascinating than just about anything else. What do you bet we start hear about
I had to comment to set you straight. Maybe there is a segment where you can claim that genealogy is an older woman pasttime but there are many of us including myself that has had the bug all their lives. I started asking questions as a child and by 12 I was seriously doing research. I'm 48 now and just hitting my stride making huge inroads into my family past. Some have the acting or music bug. I have the genealogy bug.
Recently. I decided to hit the books how to make a family tree. You might evaluate this communicate would be easy but it actually isn’t. There’s a lot of investigate involved and reams of cover!
First you want to create verbally down your family tree as you see it. Then find out what your oldest relatives denote about their oldest relatives. Look through old family books and if you sight an old family bible then you might really hit pay dirt!
Putting together a family tree takes a lot of organization to act things straight.
