WARS Trading Card Game - WARS: impressive and cheap

OverviewI had long avoided CCGs both because I don't like their sales model and because I had no idea that there were any worth playing. Anyways. I tripped across a geeklist covering dead CCGs (i e no longer published) that are still worth playing. I was still doubtfull. 'create if they are any good why were they abandoned? Well long story short between the fickleness of the CCG fandom and the grim realities of retailing anything not everyone can survive desire call. Anyways. WARS is rewrite's act to take the mechanics of their 'Star Wars' CCG and use them in a newly imagined unlicensed universe. A base set and an expansion made it onto shelves but a third was never published. But that's mostly moot the biggest draw for me was that I could get all 6 unique starter decks and a case of boosters for each set for $20. Woohoo! I love cheap. Game ComponentsThe obvious way to get started in the game is by grabbing a couple of starter decks. These go with 60 cards and rulebooks. Really tiny not entirely clear rulebooks. That's gripe #1: the rule book isn't great and if you snag the 'version 1.5' rules PDF it isn't much exceed. In fact it isn't even written in turn-phase order its an alphabetical glossary. The cards themselves are nicely done decent stock nice artwork alter symbology. They are also dual purpose both representing the materiel of the bet as well as the 'energy' the game revolves around. There are no partial quantities like hit-points etc to keep track of that require anything outside of the provided cards. Gameplay In the bet unplayed cards are used to be 'energy' the commodity used to pay for card deployments combat and movement of resources. They shift between different stacks representing 'reserve' (untapped) energy. 'available'. 'used' and the final go. 'lost'. The game is lost by whichever player has no more available energy. The sites either represent 'locations' places on a planet's surface or 'sectors' which is the space come a planet. Obviously enough spacecraft are deployed in sectors and units and vehicles are deployed at locations. There are also weapons attachable to units and ships and assets generally beneficial things. The remainder of the cards scarce actually are 'orders' special events and 'interrupts' special events that can only be played on the other players turn. The game turn consists of 'activating' energy based on locations in play then using that energy to pay for unit deployment combat and movement. Combat is straight-forward higher card stats win and there are never any partial qtys. For example if you do 5 damage and your opponent's unit has a defense of 6 its destroyed. contend can also entail 'casualties' excess energy lost. Losing control of location (ie your opponent still has troops there and you don't) leads to advance energy loss. Losing energy is bad. Lost energy not only means you're that much closer to losing but those cards are also units locations etc that you won't get to position later. Which brings up gripe #2: Locations with 'give' icons accumulation of which is necessary to carry the more powerful cards into play are randomly scattered in the deck. You undergo little control of when your better cards will become playable and when you 'suffer' energy you could be dumping them forever beyond your reach. look out that multi-faction decks are even more succeptable to this since you be that many more icons to utilize them both. There is no hand limit but you can only 'displace' the unused activated energy at the end of your turn. So there is a constant change off between needing cards in hand to choose from and having energy for deployment and combat. Anyways the bet continues in this fashion until someone can't activate any energy or can't pay an energy cost. OpinionsWARS is essentially what its name implies: a war bet using cards. The luck of the draw is occassionlly a curse but I evaluate it adds nicely to the contend nature of the game. No general has complete control over the battlefield after all. Bottom lie? I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick-playing straight-forward combat game. Just make sure you undergo a large table at your disposal. I know I was probably the only real customer UD had. . for those cards; heck. I bought a whole case of the maiden 2005 product and more than my overlap of boxes from 2006. Of course then along comes the 2007 season leaving blank pockets in my binder and a huge void in my heart (OK not really; but it did hurt). There’s still no word on plans for a 2008 AFL product. I’m not holding my breath though. I’ll expect the beat (no cards) and be giddy if any are released. In the meantime. I’ll have to go back doing what AFL collectors had to do back in the old days: Scouring the globe for all those obscure team-issued sets. Hey it beats nothing. By the way here’s what got me thinking about Arena Football in the dead of NFL season: For starters my beloved Broncos are slumming in the AFC this year so I’m looking for anything to take my mind off of that.
